Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered counseling method for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about changing health risk behaviors. This course will explore the principles and applications of Motivational Interviewing in behavioral health services. It will examine the spirit and principles of Motivational Interviewing, its fundamental method and how to tailor Motivational Interviewing in work with consumers of mental health and addiction services. Emphasis will be placed on helping people resolve ambivalence about changing health risk behaviors, evoking change talk, change planning, applications of Motivational Interviewing skills with different mental health, addiction and health behaviors across a variety of clinical settings, and the latest developments in Motivational Interviewing.


How it Works

This is a four-week, online course. Each week students are given material to complete online at their convenience during the week. A .pdf certificate will be issued upon completion of all course material and a course evaluation.


Learning Objectives

  • Describe the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and demonstrate how to apply the fundamental method of MI (OARS) to help people change risk behaviors
  • Define the difference between change talk and sustain talk and describe how MI could evoke change talk
  • Demonstrate the use of MI in developing a change plan and sustaining change
  • Give an example of the applications of MI in the treatment of people with mental health, co-occurring substance use disorders, and related health conditions across a variety of clinical settings

About the Facilitator

Patricia A. Burke, MSW, LCSW, BCD is a Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work, a Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Social Worker and a Certified Clinical Supervisor with over 30 of clinical and teaching experience.
